Tre Golfi Sailing Week: two races on the first day of the ORC Mediterranean Championship in Sorrento

Home / News / Tre Golfi Sailing Week: two races on the first day of the ORC Mediterranean Championship in Sorrento

Sorrento provided good conditions for the first day of the Tre Golfi Sailing Week 2024. Two beautiful races for the Mediterranean ORC Championship, also valid as the National Championship of the Middle and Lower Tyrrhenian Sea.

Sorrento (NA), May 9, 2024 - After much anticipation, the 2024 edition of the Tre Golfi Sailing Week officially kicked off today, marking the beginning of the springtime sailing season for the finest international sailors. Three events make up the Tre Golfi Week, organized by the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia di Napoli – with the support of Rolex as the official timepiece and Loro Piana – the IMA Maxi European Championship, the historic Tre Golfi Regatta now in its 69th edition, and the Mediterranean ORC Championship, also serving as the National Championship of the Middle and Lower Tyrrhenian Sea, which today completed its first two races.

The Sorrento Peninsula welcomed the 26 participating crews this morning with overcast skies and occasional showers, but with a good Grecale wind blowing at around 12 knots, allowing them to leave the docks around 9:30 a.m., immediately after the skipper briefing, to start the first race at 11:00 a.m., right on schedule. As the boats reached the course, conditions became more challenging, and the breeze was not stable enough, leading the Race Committee, led by Stuart Chinderley, to cancel the windward-leeward race after the fleet had completed the first of two laps around the marks.

Following a brief wait on the water for the 26 participants, the wind returned, less intense but more stable, allowing the completion of the first race of the championship, won by the German TP52 Red Bandit skippered by Carlo Peter Foster, followed by Lisa R skippered by Giovanni di Vincenzo and Musica skippered by Huber Ruedi, all in the Racer category. The second race started as a timid sun broke through the clouds, enabling crews from six nations to start smoothly; this time, the fastest was the Estonian Sugar 2 skippered by Ott Kikkas, followed by the Ker 46 Lisa R and the French Daguet 3 skippered by Frederic Puzin.

At the end of the day, after two races, the leaders in the various categories are Lisa R for the Racer group, Sugar 3 for A-B Cruiser Racer, and Wanax Exp Team 2 The World for the C Cruiser Racer.

Tomorrow's program includes two more races, but this evening, all crews are invited to the regatta village for the Crew Party with DJ set, featuring pasta and mozzarella from Taverna Penta, accompanied by Corricella Gin, Ferrarelle water, and of course, Campanian wines from Feudi di San Gregorio wineries.
